In November 2015, an anonymous woman filed a police report in Newport Beach, California, after her video was posted on Girls Do Porn. A copy of the report obtained by The Appeal shows that she told police that she was raped by Garcia after filming her video. She said she had met Garcia that September after responding to a Craigslist ad for a modeling job that linked to a website called Begin Modeling. It wasn’t until she arrived at the shoot that she learned she would be filming porn.

Mislabeling abusive media as porn makes it seem like “this is something that either platforms or performers are complicit with,” said Mike Stabile, director of public policy at the Free Speech Coalition, the adult industry trade group. When she was sixteen, the doctor in her small town of two thousand people prescribed the Pill because of her painful periods—but didn’t bother to tell her its primary purpose was to help prevent pregnancy. Then, the first time she had sex, on the night of her high school graduation, she became pregnant, though they used a condom.

Pornhub removes Girls Do Porn, finally drawing a line at sex trafficking charges

During the course of the civil trial, Pratt, Garcia and Wolfe were criminally indicted for sex trafficking, among other charges. Above all, the young women were promised that their identities would be protected and that the videos and their real names would never be shared online. However, Girls Do Porn distributed the films shortly after shooting, and the videos ended up on hugely popular sites like Pornhub and YouPorn, garnering millions of views apiece. Once flown to San Diego, the women said, they were put in hotel rooms set up for porn films and pressured to sign long, complicated contracts with hardly any time to read them. They were also often threatened to participate and given drugs and alcohol before the shoots, the judge said. A man who helped create a video prosecutors say was intended to harass women who were sex trafficking victims of San Diego-based website GirlsDoPorn.com has been sentenced to just over a year in federal prison.

Normally she weighs just one hundred pounds, and each of her pregnancies had been difficult and severely stressed her body. In 1940, when she was eighteen, the poet and activist Grace Paley tiptoed into her doctor’s office and lied about being married so she could get a diaphragm. “We all knew that birth control existed, but we also knew it was impossible to get,” begins her essay “The Illegal Days,” part of Paley’s collection Just As I Thought. Her life, she says, is irrevocably changed, and her hopes of a legal career have been ended.

Holm Law Group, which represents more than 80 Girls Do Porn victims, sent two letters to Cloudflare in the last year—one in October 2022, and another last month—demanding that the company drop a list of more than 100 porn websites hosting their content. The women in these videos legally own that content, as a result of a ruling by a federal judge in 2021. On January 2, 2020, after a 99-day bench trial, Judge Kevin A. Enright awarded the plaintiffs $13 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The defendants were ordered to remove all videos of plaintiffs from the Internet and cease all distribution of them. During the civil trial, Pratt, Garcia, Wolfe, and several other individuals were criminally indicted for sex trafficking.

As survivors and data show, some people have been forced, tricked, or coerced into entering the industry in the first place, unable to leave once they’ve started. Not only that, but performers who are already in the industry can be forced, tricked, or coerced into performing sex acts they’re uncomfortable with, or performing with other performers on their “no” list. Still, from now on, Girls Do Porn is required to explicitly state in recruitment postings that the videos will be posted online.

The charges are separate from an ongoing trial in San Diego Superior Court, in which 22 women are accusing the company of recruiting them to shoot porn under false pretenses. In their suit, the women claim that they were told that they were being hired for modeling jobs, for which they would be paid $5,000, and were not informed that they would be making pornographic content until they arrived on set. During testimony earlier this week, Moser, who spoke on behalf of the plaintiffs, said that Pratt instructed her not to tell recruits the name of the company, telling her to call it “Plus One Media” instead.

These computers were later removed from the property by a couple of Pratt’s former employees, Fredrick and Efrain Jimenez, who were later charged with obstructing sex-trafficking enforcement. When questioned, they claimed to have not seen any computers inside of the home, which went against testimony provided by a pet-sitting service that Pratt had hired to take care of his cat. The brothers plead ignorance, but authorities believe that the two either destroyed or hid the computers somewhere in an attempt to hinder their investigation. In that regard, the case continues to remain unsolved, because this is a problem that will never truly go away for the women that had to live through it.

“Aylo finally removed Girls Do Porn’s videos from its websites,” the suit states. “But this was too little too late. Aylo had already spent a decade spreading the videos to every corner of the globe where they could be downloaded for free with the click of a button.” She is now shining a light on the sinister reality of pornography, and how it is so often made — a quest born out of her honest and raw recollection of the night she was so violently abused; she suffered significant vaginal tearing and even tried — unsuccessfully — to flee the hotel completely naked. The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million for each plaintiff in compensatory and punitive damages and to bar Aylo from ever again hosting the victims’ videos. But even if the stigma against porn and its performers didn’t exist, there would still be sex trafficking and exploitation. Judge Kevin Enright described in his findings how the need to keep finding young women new to the porn industry drove the “deceptive, coercive and threatening behaviour” used by the defendants. Several people linked to GirlsDoPorn were named in a federal indictment handed up in 2019, including the company’s co-owners, Matthew Isaac Wolfe and Michael James Pratt. “Their advertisements would say ‘College women sought for video shoots for $5,000.’ If you’re young and need help, it’s kind of a no-brainer. They had no idea.” “It’s vindication for the brave women who came forward after being manipulated and lied to by GirlsDoPorn,” Ed Chapin, the lead attorney for the plaintiffs, told BuzzFeed News. “They were young and inexperienced, and their lives were changed because they were sucked in by this disgusting, fraudulent scheme.”
